Blue Monday 11/10

Hip Hip Hoo-ray! It's time for BLUE MONDAY Graciously hosted by Sally @ Smiling Sally.
After your visit here, be sure to swing by her place and check out all the blue beauties :0)

This is a vintage postcard, dated from the 40s. It is from Cape Cod. The message on the back reads of a lady sending greetings and making mention that as the holiday approaches her rooms will once again be "filled".
I must be in a sea-side kind of mood. This was taken this past August on the Central Coast of California while hubbs and I were on a vacation. Nothing can compare to the "hues" of blue Mother Nature invokes.
This was taken the very same day, but about an hour later into the afternoon/evening. Same camera but you can see how the hues have changed. I've always thought the changes of the hues in the sky and water are brought about by a bit of magic...The sky is a much deeper blue and the ocean water seems more navy.

Show & Tell Friday 11/7

It's Friday! Time for Show & Tell so graciously hosted by Kelli @ There's no place like home
Be sure to pay her a visit and see who else is "sharing" today.

This is something I shared months ago in another post, but I daresay it deserves a repeat performance (and the batteries died in my camera making it impossible to upload the shots I had originally decided to share. Ah well, there's always next week.). It's a Christening Gown. I, as well as my two daughters were Christened in this gown. It was made especially for me.
(click on any picture to enlarge)
Notice the hand embroidery...This detailing is also on the skirt of the gown . This is the underskirt...The gown...And cap. The embroidery was never completed on this. I've thought about having someone "finish" it, but that's all I've done...just "think" about it. I can't help but feel like I should leave it alone...
Thanks for spending some of your Friday with me. I hope you'll let me know you were here :0).
Have a fantastic day!

Time for~~~ THREE OR MORE THURSDAY !!!

Three or more Thursday is hosted by Tam @ The Gypsy's Corner, so be sure to pop on over and pay her a visit and see who else is showing their "three's and more".

I love tablecloths. Be they vintage or new, they become treasured and are well used and displayed often. I love "dressing" a table...whether I'm dressing it up or giving it a more casual feel...
The fist cloth (from the left) is dated from the 1940s and the embroidery on this piece is wonderful! The last one, on the far right, is dated from the 1950s and is a Wilendur. The fabrics of these cloths is sturdy and quite heavy. No wonder they've stood the test of time. The one in the center is yellow with pink and I'll bet it could tell some great stories. It's been lovingly used, not only by me, but by it's previous "keepers" as well. It's got some stains here and there, but in my opinion, that just adds more character to a fabulous cloth.
My eldest daughter and her sweet boyfriend gifted me with this cloth on my last birthday. This was an Ebay win and I just had to have it! It is huge! It also matches the dishtowel/table runner that is displayed on the serving cart. I won these two items at two different times. I just must have been meant to bring them together. They are a perfect match!I love, love, love Waverly and while this cloth isn't vintage, it is in fact, one of my favorites and I use it almost daily. It has stood up against two rather rambunctious little boys, three crazy canines and the rest of my pretty large family. I love how it coordinates so well with the pantry plaid panels. Look! You can see how I usually "keep" my cloths. There they are. Right there! On the server :0)This cloth was this year's Mother's Day present from my youngest children and my hubbs. My son picked it out and did he make the perfect choice or what? It matches the decor perfectly, the colors are perfect and of course, one can never go wrong with roses. This boy knows his momma!I've more cloths but thought this would be enough for now, I know you've others to visit today. Thank you for sharing a bit of your day with me.
Now be sure to head on over to Tam's!

Our First Date "anniversary"

I know it's funny to say but we celebrate our very first date. November 4th is our "first date anniversary". Being that it was election day, we wanted to stay close to the tv and see how the voting was progressing. I made a simple dinner of spaghetti and we just spent the night with the family and on the couch watching the tv. Hubbs did bring me these though. How sweet huh? We'll go to dinner at the end of the week and remember that very first date, laugh a bit, tease each other and then make our way home and reflect on how us being together has made such a wonderful family.

Get out and VOTE...

GOD BLESS AMERICA...

Remember to get out and vote. It's not just our "right", it's our "responsibility".

How Women Got to Vote-(courtesy NVLB)

I was talking to a woman friend of mine about the issue of young women voting. I may be wrong, but I seem to remember a statistic that said that they are voting in increasingly smaller numbers. My friend sent this to me in response to that discussion. Feel free to pass it along to your friends.

How Women Got To Vote (courtesy of NVLB-No Vote Left Behind)

A short history lesson on the privilege of voting…

The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of “obstructing sidewalk traffic.”

They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women. Thus unfolded the “Night of Terror” on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won’t vote this year because–why exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining?

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO’s new movie “Iron Jawed Angels.” It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history, saw the HBO movie too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was–with herself. “One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,” she said. “What would those women think of the way I use–or don’t use–my right to vote? all of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.” The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her “all over again.”

HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and DVD. I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunko night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order. It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse.

Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: “Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.”

Please pass this on to all the women you know. We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women.

Blue Monday 11/3

Hip Hip Hoo-ray! It's time for BLUE MONDAY Graciously hosted by Sally @ Smiling Sally.
After your visit here, be sure to swing by her place and check out all the blue beauties :0)

This quilt belongs to my youngest daughter. When she was younger (much younger) it graced her bed. I miss the days where we would decorate her room "girlie girl" and "floofy". For now it spends most of it's time in the closet but one day, when my nest is "emptier", I hope to find a new home for it and have a room where all the floof and flowers will go.

This is my mail box. I love my mail box. I like the way it's got an "aged" look about it and I love how sturdy it is. It's a type of iron and if that lid falls to hard, you better watch the tips of your fingers!

Thanks for stopping by and spending some of your Monday with me. Be sure to visit Smiling Sally for some more BLUE.

Have a Marvelous Monday!

Happy Pink Saturday 11/1

It's that time again where we all get to proudly parade our pink. Pink Saturday is graciously hosted by Beverly over at "How Sweet The Sound". Be sure to pay her a visit and see who else is sharing pink today.

It's been a hectic few days and I haven't had much time for anything. I'm posting something I shared a while back. Hope you don't mind.

This is my Princess House China made by Hammersly-Spode. These are just some of the pieces. I've been rebuilding the set that once belonged to my mother. Over the years and after various earthquakes, the set dwindled (broken and damaged pieces). Thankfully I still have one or two pieces of the original set. This pattern is called Windsor Rose and I love it! It's so ultra feminine and I feel the vintage table cloth is a perfectly imperfect match. Can you just picture yourself enjoying a cup of tea and as you sip, that pinky finger points straight up and out. LOL!

Thanks for spending some of your Saturday with me. I hope your day is great!
